GAY PRIDE Event
To get as far as actually having a Gay Pride in Liverpool is great, however, as with all new events there are things to learn. The carnival atmosphere was OK but not very representative of how many of us identify and live out our lives. Like many diverse people, I do not dress up/look particularly outrageous, I am an ordinary citizen who just happens to be bisexual. I think the pride event was an important step forward but some of the tacky comments made on stage did not resonate with me and my gay and straight friends who attended this family event - gay should not be automatically be portrayed as promiscuous or bawdy, many of us are celebate/ monogomous and comments made on stage made by a guy dressed in a white pants and rainbow top were just in-appropriate and offensive. I think that the event would have benefited from less 'Benny Hill' charachatures who dominated the scene sending out a distorted view of the LGBT community to straight onlookers whose support we seek for future success relies on the image we put across today. On a positive note, I was impressed with the turn out and the cross section of ages that came. Is it also time that the older community were included more in the social scene...there is a lot of support out there for young gays but nothing for older ones...A challenge for somebody perhaps to create a scene for the over thirtys. I look forward to next year's pride and hope that this event may continue to travel northwards...rumour has it that there is a gay community in Southport too...
