Autumn Arts Explosion!

Liverpool is proving a wonderful place for LGBT art lovers once again, starting with this weekend..

First up, on FRIDAY 30 SEPTEMBER, the Abandon Normal Devices Festival (AND) have got together with CHEW DISCO and HOMOTOPIA to present Bruce la Bruce’s new film, L.A. Zombie at the Wolstenholme Creative Space, on Wolstenholme Square from 10pm onwards. The event is FREE, but as ever CHEW DISCO will be collecting for charities that support LGBT people living in countries that have repressive regimes and actively persecute LGBT cultures.

Bruce la Bruce describes L.A. Zombie as “gornographic” – gory and porny to the rest of us! Our hero is a member of the undead, forever trying to bring young men back to life through his unforgettable sexual powers. Make sure you get down there for the unique combination of this world-renowned film-maker and Liverpool’s own queer movers and shakers CHEW DISCO who will be playing their usual blistering indie tracks. Don’t take your auntie….unless she’s a very unusual girl…

Then SATURDAY 1 OCTOBER heralds DEATH BY GLITTER: The Vogue Ball. I am in love with the House of Suarez – they were one of my highlights of Liverpool Pride in both 2010 and 2011 and here I get to lust after them for a whole evening! They bring their wonderful energy and pzazz on to a stage compared by the inimitable Rikki Beadle-Blair; a man so full of energy that I don’t understand why he isn’t hooked up to the national grid instead of Connah’s Quay!

Get down to the Black-E for an evening of style, dance, humour, outrageousness and sheer fun. The doors open at 7pm and the stage lights up from 8 onwards. Dress to impress, as they say!

If you stayed in on Saturday night to wash your hair (but why, why????), make sure you get out early on Sunday morning for THE BALLAD OF GENESIS AND LADY JAYE at FACT, 11.30am, to make up for it. Another offering from the AND Festival, this fascinating film looks at the journey undertaken by Genesis P Orridge (of Throbbing Gristle and Psychic TV fame) to change his appearance to match that of his partner Lady Jaye. Going far beyond the usual concepts of plastic surgery, Genesis calls this process Creating the Pandrogyne – a love story not to be missed.

This week HOMOTOPIA launched their line up for 2011 – check it out at http://www.homotopia.net.

This year their tag line is Cruising For Art which I think says it all – everything is in there from Lily Savage’s frocks, a huge range of theatre and dance from the moving to the startling, hilarity with the Lavender Girls and photography and painting galore. This has to be the sexiest LGBT arts Festival in the UK bar none: great nights out for grown-ups who want their minds turned on as well as all the other bits.

There’s no excuse – Liverpool is teeming with marvellous things to look at and people to listen to – get out there and do your own Cruising for Art!
